THANE: As part of their drives to improve traffic in the city, the Thane traffic police registered over three lakh cases and collected Rs 4.32 crore, since the beginning of the year. Interestingly, the cops registered over 32,000 cases in October only and collected Rs 37 lakh from these offenders.
The steps taken by the vigilance wing to ensure traffic safety has resulted in a decline in the number of accidents.
The cops have booked people driving under the influence of alcohol, not using helmets while riding their bikes, not wearing seatbelts, illegal parking, fancy number plates, plying more than three people in an auto rickshaw, as well as auto drivers refusing to ply short distances.
Since January this year, the cops have booked 4,267 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol and collected a fine of Rs 65.58 lakh from them. Out of these drivers, 14 of them have been sent to court and have been booked under the Motor Vehicle Act. In the month of October alone, 217 cases of drinking and driving were registered. Rs 6.71 lakh was collected from these offenders.
The cops have also registered 3,433 cases for motorcyclists riding without a helmet, as well as 2,013 cases of motorists not wearing seatbelts. Drivers going beyond the speed limits were also booked by the cops
Apart from these cases, the cops have also booked drivers, who talk on their cell phones while driving.
The cops hope to rake in some more money into their kitty before the end of the financial year.
